Haiti’s (moral) fiber

I had another conference call with Kira and Dan in Boston & Brett in Port-au-Prince this evening. Brett has been doing some fantastic work since he got there preparing our arrival by gathering as much as possible local intel. But most of all Brett is out there to see if he can restore the fiber optic link with the Bahamas and the inland fiber ring. He was one of the people involved in building the link in the first place. The importance of establishing if the cable is actually intact and getting everything connected again is of huge importance to restoring telecommunications in and out of the country. A lot of cross-border connectivity is being run via micro-wave or satellite links at the moment.

A mangled rack amongst the debris. This used to hold some of the fiber optic equipment.

Searching for the “Zero manhole”, hoping to find the fiber optic cable.

Could this be it?

I can gladly say that Brett eventually found the “Zero Manhole” and has been able to run some tests. He should know soon if the fiber optic cable from Port-au-Prince to the Bahamas is intact and the same for the cable from PaP to Delmas.В  Updates will follow….
