While doing my research for our Haiti relief effort I came into contact with someone who lived in Haiti and who worked as an IT guy in a local car dealership. He had obviously survived the earthquake and his tweets were painting a clear picture about what life was like for the survivors. He even at one point got in touch, through twitter, with another survivor so they could meet up and he offered to share some of his food. Very in your face stuff.
Anyway, we had some back and forth messaging through twitter and I emailed him for some feedback on the situation on the ground. This was important for us as there had a some criticism from 1 or 2 people that the type off service/network that we wanted to build was not at all necessary. Well I can now safely say that they were wrong! Read the verbatim copy of the email below:
Hi Evert,
Sorry for the delay. it is precisely because of this problem of access to the Internet that I took the time to answer you. I use the connection of my employer to do personal things like using Twitter. So, when work’s closed I don’t have Internet connection.
This project would be very helpful and welcomed in Haiti now. Much people need to call their relatives abroad but don’t have the money to call through the cellular networks and in the cybercafes in place.
Since this will serve hospitals, schools, public buildings, etc.. and that many of these places are already well secured, you will not have many problems. In addition, there are well equipped security companies and bodyguard agencies in place. But I don’t have any idea of those costs.
This is one of the greatest help we receive. I take this opportunity to let you know that I’m an IT Professional working for a car dealer and I’d be happy to work in a relief or rebuilding project for Haiti that requires my IT skills. Thank you!
Best Reguards,
Amstyl XXXXXXXX
